Photography Classes Set To Begin for 2012!

Our Basic DSLR Class will be Saturday, March 10th starting at 10am.

This is a group class from 10am until 12:30. There will be a one hour class time to learn what the functions on your camera are such as shutter priority, aperture priority, in camera metering and ISO.

Then we will have hands on studio time to take controlled images in the studio to see the effects of what your shutter, aperture and ISO selections will do for you. The remainder of he class time will be outdoors (weather permitting) to experiment with what you learned and ask questions!

The iPad has a split keyboard?

I just recently learned that my iPad has the ability to split the keyboard so that I can easily type with my thumbs. Apple has slipped in a few hidden features into this keyboard that everyone should know.The most hidden feature (literally) are the ghost keys when the keyboard is split. As shown in the picture above these are the locations of the hidden keys. When you press in the blank area it will type the ghost letter. This will work in both landscape and portrait orientations.

Another tip is when the keyboard is not separated you can easily separate the keyboard by placing two fingers anywhere on the keyboard and swiping your fingers in a outward direction. You can bring the keyboard back together by pinching your fingers together. You can also click and hold on the keyboard icon to either dock, split, or merge. Have you used the split keyboard much or do you think the keys are too small?

Keepingtight quality control of your portfolio is a must. While updating yourportfolio with every new image you receive may seem appealing, you can overloadyour client with too many images or risk repetition by posting multiples fromthe same set. What you like the most may not be the best image to advertiseyourself as a model, so think of your portfolio as a sales pitch and make sureyou’re promoting yourself with the very best. It can be exciting to receive 10new images from the same shoot, so if you’re too excited to choose just one,sit on them for a few days until you can look at them more objectively, from abusiness standpoint.

Understandyour strengths, as well as your weaknesses, and show a potential client thatyou can find your best angles. For example, if you’re flexible, get photos thataccentuate your flexibility. If you have a great face, make sure to get someamazing beauty shots. You are using these images to convince someone to use youfor their project over anyone else in their area; keep in mind what you areselling and make sure it is accentuated in your portfolio.

You also need to make sure your portfolio shows all the aspects ofyour look that a client may be interested in: your face, your full body, andany particular parts of you that are specifically excellent. If you havemagnificent, graceful hands, for example, keep an image in which they are themain focus in your portfolio. Different “looks” are also a good addition toyour portfolio, by sharing with your clients your command over facialexpressions.

Inshort, focus on images that show you off as a versatile, self-aware model.

In addition to the expected moments of the wedding day itself,we had a fantastic river wedding over Mayo River in Virginia. The newlyweds hoped for a dusting of snow onthis January 4^th, 2012 wedding day. Instead we endured 40ish temperatures on the custom made deck over theriver! Steven and his crew setup plentyof heaters and fire pits for their guest to stay warm! And one guest even showed up via the river landingin his kayak!

Very soon after the ceremony the wedding was moved to theNorthern Belle Restaurant in Madison, NC. This was my first time at Northern Belle Restaurant and I must say itwas a very nice place and well organized for a wedding reception. And I have to say the food was wonderful andI will be visiting soon with the family for dinner!

What Makes A Great Business Headshot

The goal of a business headshot is for you look your honest best. There are several ingredients that make a great headshot stand above an average image:

First, the headshot needs to look professional and refined. It takes experience and knowledge to create the proper lighting, focus, and expert composition that a talented headshot photographer provides. Expertise in color correction and subtle retouching also serves to make a headshot stand out.

It is very important to choose a headshot photographer who demonstrates in their portfolio the skills and talent to deliver a great headshot.

Next, the headshot should look natural. People are very astute to the sincerity of a photograph. If the pose, expression, lighting or composition of the headshot looks forced or unnatural, it will undermine the purpose of having a headshot in the first place.

To look natural it is important that you feel relaxed and comfortable with the photographer. On location or in a studio, a peaceful, relaxed environment will help, but the photographer’s demeanor will play the most important role. Their attitude in setting up and photographing you will have a huge impact on how natural you feel in front of the camera. Whether you’re a professional model or a camera-shy business person, a great headshot photographer will help you to feel and look natural.

Looking natural doesn’t end with the photo session. It is important that the photographer knows how to make natural looking adjustments to the image afterwards. The camera sees differently than you or I, and therefore adjustments need to be made in post-processing to give the most natural result. There is both an art and a science to perfecting the image without making it look processed.

Lastly, but just as importantly, the headshot must reflect your personality. Only you can bring your personality to the session, but a great headshot photographer can help spot it, capture it, and be sure it comes through in the final results.

To help with capturing your personality, talk with the photographer about what you want to convey in your headshot. Think about which facets you would ideally like to represent about yourself. Is it sharp intellect? Good humor? Trustworthy business skills? Style? Warmth? Sensuality? The lighting and composition techniques will be different for each.

Getting Your Elbows Away from YourBody
If you stand with your elbows touching the sides of your body in a photograph,your body will look as wide as the elbow-to-elbow dimension. On the other hand, if you move your elbowsslightly away from your sides, creating a small separation between your bodyand your arm, people will notice the cut-in of your waistline in yourphotographs. With your arms out,separate from your body, your torso appears slimmer.

This trick requires care in its use. You want to see a slight separation betweenyour body and elbows. Pushing yourelbows out too far will make you look like you’re doing the chicken dance! Also, in the course of moving their elbowsoutwards, many brides lift their shoulders, which we already know is a badthing. A little separation between elbowand waist is all that’s required and all that you want.

Famous Photographers Pose With Their Iconic Images

San Diego-based photographer Tim Mataoni shows us the people behind iconic photographs by taking portraits of them with his 20x24 Polaroid view camera with their famous works.

Mantoani’s book titled ‘Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends’ consists of 20x24-inch Polaroid portraits including Iyle Owerco with his famous 911 Twin Towers and Douglas Kirkland with his Marilyn Monroe image — amongst other equally famous photographers.

According to Mantoani—who shot over 150 of these portraits in the last five years—at a time where everyone and anyone can easily be a photographer, he feels the need to help people understand that iconic photos don’t just happen.

“Without these people and their understanding of photography, these moments would not be there for us to understand and appreciate over the course of time,” he adds.

What camera should I buy?

There are a lot of factors that go into buying a camera especially when they range from $200 to thousands of dollars! One of the first things I would ask myself is “what is the end result when processing my images?” In other words are you a person who will be printing your images to display in your home or office or more like 90% of Americans who either leave them on the camera’s flash card or download them to facebook. It makes no sense to spend thousands of dollars or more on a camera if you don’t intent to print them and display them in your home or office. Most people now save them to the computer with good intentions of printing them later. But let’s face it, life is busy and we never do! You wouldn’t believe how many people bring to me their flash cards or hard drives after they have accidentally erased them. The photos were not important at the time to have them printed, but now that they have been erased they were priority. Something to think about… print those pictures!

When choosing a camera, is more better? Yes, but only if you know how to use it. It cracks me up when I see people with a huge DSLR with a great lens on it and they have the camera set to “P” (the P is for the camera’s Auto Program function, not Professional). If you don’t know anything about shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, ISO or what different focal lengths do to an image – then you are wasting your money. If you are going to put the camera on “P” then save your money and buy a good pocket camera.

Here are a few cameras I have selected that would make great images. Keep in mind that the higher the MegaPixels don’t necessarily mean a better camera. I have listed four cameras here but the two more expensive cameras have 2MP less than the less expensive cameras. But, the 10MP sensors are better that the 12MP in the case of the cameras sensors (a whole different subject for later). But, while we are on MegaPixels most people don’t want to go out and buy a $100 flash card(s) for their cameras. So they buy the less expensive cards and dial down their resolution to be able to get more images on their cards. What… you have a 12MP camera but your only getting 2 to 4 MP files? Yes, you did it because you wanted more images on your card. But, don’t be alarmed. A 2MP file is more than enough to print an 8x10. Are you even printing? If not, 2MP is way too much for web viewing and scrapbooking. So, is a 12 or more MegaPixel camera an overshot… yes, unless you plan to print 24x30 wall portraits!

If you are a person who likes that “P” mode for ‘professional’ and you have no desire to manually try and create some images by thinking about it, then I would recommend either the Canon Powershot 100HS or the Nikon Coolpix S4100. Both cameras have the same functions with image stabilization, face detection, HD video and high resolution which you may never use. The Canon is a 12.1MP and the Nikon is 14MP. The great thing about these cameras is they have the ability to capture video! The Canon is priced around $170 and the Nikon $157. Both are user friendly and have a 3” display. Great cameras for the Point and Shoot photographer.

Now if you want more control of your images, but don’t have an SUV to carry the DSLR and equipment around in try the Canon Powershot G12 or the Nikon P7000. I have the Nikon P7000 myself. Both cameras give you the ability to change most often used functions with dials and buttons on the exterior of the camera in manual mode. Unlike a point and shoot camera you will not have to go into the cameras menu every time you want to change a setting. This gives you more freedom to be creative instead of looking for a function then missing the shot.

The Canon G12 and the Nikon P7000 are 10Mp cameras (plenty) and have HD video as well. Two things that stood out with the Nikon P7000 for me was the higher ISO range for low light conditions and the larger display of 3”. The Canon G12 only had a 2.8” display. Does sound like a big difference, but when you get to be my age the bigger display is appreciated!

The price on the Canon G12 is around $470 and the Nikon P7000 is around $449. If you hurry www.bhphotovideo.com has an instant savings of $100 on the P7000 bringing it down to $349 (great buy for this camera) and an instant saving of $40 on the Nikon Coolpix S4100.

Facebook - Edit Info

Recently I have had a few questions in regards to the "Edit Info" option on other peoples facebook fan pages. There is concern that you can edit other peoples information and that is not true. Only "admins" to your page can actually change information.

You will see if you click on someones fan page info tab an option to "Edit Info." This will only allow you to suggest information relating to that business. This function is there to assist facebook in correcting information for it's "places" application. You will also see a place below to check for duplicate locations for the same business.

If a business has not listed an address and you are unable to "check-in" you will not see an option to "Edit Info" on their info tab.

So, if you see errors about the business information go ahead and click on the "Edit Info" and make suggestions to facebook to correct that info.

Tamron XR-Di 28-75mm 2.8

If you are in the market for a short zoom the Tamron XR-Di 28-75mm 2.8 in Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Pentax is a sure way to go and at a real bargain at a street price of $499

I like this lens and it is anything short of amazing. It is light weight, easy to use and its performance compares to other lenses in its category at three times the price!

Maybe as an amateur or aspiring photographer most lenses you choose or are provided to you with the camera kit cannot hold a constant aperture throughout their zoom. Some lenses vary as much as 2 focal lengths in their zoom range. Not so with the Tamron XR-Di 28-75mm 2.8. I’m really surprised at how sharp this lens is and how fast it focuses. Don’t take my word for it. Go to your local Tamron dealer and do some test shots in the store. You will be simply amazed!

The Tamron isn’t built for the daily grind of the news reporter, but is definitely a lens of choice for the typical wedding/commercial photographer. It will definitely be a lens I keep in my gear bag!

People like to hire people whom they like. Using YOUR NAME as your business name seperates your from the big companies.

Take for instance my business, when someone hires me to photograph them they are hiring me and not my business. After speaking with me they learn my talents, abilities and personality. If they feel like I am a good fit for their project they will hire me!

Names like Jay Lovejoy Photographer, Lovejoy Photography and Lovejoy Photography Studio are much more effective than something like Innovative Photography or Studio 7 Photography. Sometimes I do have some clients who meet me for the first time ask if "Lovejoy" is really my last name (it is).

Potential clients will want to know that it is you whom they are hiring. If you are an artist, don't feel the need to be creative with the name in order to prove to clients you are creative. They will see it in your work. You are key to the business and it is YOU and your TALENTS that your clients hire.

World Dance Championships

Dancers Edge was among an elite group of studios from across the country and Canada to be selected for the World Dance Championship Series August 5-6, 2011 in Dallas, TX.

Thousands of studios from all over United States and Canada competed at dance competitions sanctioned by the Federation of Dance Competitions this season. Routines had to place in the top overalls in at least two FDC competitions during the regional season to qualify, which narrowed the list to around 1,000 routines that were eligible. The routines then ranked according to score, and the executive committee for the Federation of Dance Competitions voted to invite the TOP FIVE in each age division to go head to head at the World finals in August. Dancers Edge routine "Decisions, Decisions" was selected as one of those top five routines in the Senior Age division (age15-19).

Will Your Grandchildren Be Upset With You? by Fred Molesworth
Imagine, 50 years from now, as your grandchildren or great grandchildren are going through the boxes in the attic. Finding all kinds of treasures and keepsakes, they are enthralled with what they are, and how they tie into the story of your life.

Amongst all the old items, they find a number of round silver objects. Some have writing on them, some are blank, but they resemble some kind of small platter about 4 inches across, with a hole in the middle. Puzzled, they take them to their parents. “What are these, mom?” they ask. “Oh, I think those are all of grandma’s photographs. Yep, here’s on labeled “My Wedding”. Here’s one labeled “Family Photos”, and some more labeled “Vacations”.” “How do we look at them?” they ask. ” Well, I’m not sure we can. First of all, no one has the device that reads these any more. And besides that, I doubt after all these years that they’re any good any more. Being stored in the attic, the heat and cold probably ruined them.”
The kids are very disappointed. Nowhere among all the treaures are an actual prints. All that history is lost. Their connection with the past, and all the wonderful stories that might have gone along with all those photographs are gone as well.

Along with all the wonders of our digital age come some significant problems that most people have never thought of.
Did you know that somewhere around 90% of all images taken on today’s digital cameras are NEVER PRINTED? I’m guilty or that myself. I have gigabytes of personal photographs that have never been seen other than on a computer screen.

In the old days, film went to the lab, and everything that was printable was printed. Even if it was a bad photograph, it still was a hard copy, a part of your family history, and it had permanence. Even if it never went in an album, it at least went into a box, to be discovered as treasures years later. I just came across some wonderful old prints of my mother’s childhood from back in the 1920’s. They’re TREASURES. They connect me with my past, and keep alive some of the memories of stories my mother told me about growing up. But that is not possible with images that never leave the hard drive, and are lost when the hard drive fails. Or with images that are placed on CD’s or DVD’s, because that chances of being able to read them in 50 years in just about zero. Try to find an 8 track tape player today, or one of those large 12? floppy drives, or even a 5? floppy. And those were popular less than 20 years ago.

The same problem exists in professional portrait studios today. Many people are simply asking for the images on CD. “I’ll print them later” or “I’ll design my own wedding album” are common phrases. Usually this is done with the thought that they will save some money by doing it themselves.
But you know what? Most never make it into any kind of album. Life gets busy, other things get in the way, and 5 years later, they’ll still only have a disk. Kids come along, and life gets insane, and 20 years later, they’ll be looking for some way to read those disks, if they even happen to think about it.

And then 50 years later, the grandkids are having the conversation with their parents.

I work with a wedding planner – a professional in the wedding business – who fits this description perfectly. Her photographer simply gave her images on a disc. Five years later, that’s all she has, and she admitted that it is likely that it’s all she’ll ever have. Now with a new baby, she’ll probably never get around to designing an album. Life now has other priorities.
We periodically get call from people in this situation, wondering if we would design an album for them, retouch images, or if we can fix the poor quality images that were taken by someone by who didn’t know how, or feel the need to provide a quality finished product.

I bring this up only to point out the importance of what we, as a professional studio, do. Our job is not just to create the images, to create wonderful story telling photographs about the people in front of our camera. It is to create a final product, whether it be a professionally retouched printed single image, a family heirloom wall portrait, or an incredible storybook album using a collection of the images that were created.

It doesn’t matter whether it is a wedding, a newborn baby, senior or a family. Having the final product created for you is important. To do less is to leave the job half done, and to short-change the customer.
You will have something wonderful to show, something your family will love for generations, and something your grandchildren can truly get excited about when they discover that box in the attic.

Use Flash Outdoors

Bright sun can create unattractive deep facial shadows. Eliminate the shadows by using your flash to lighten the face. When taking people pictures on sunny days, turn your flash on. You may have a choice of fill-flash mode or full-flash mode. If the person is within five feet, use the fill-flash mode; beyond five feet, the full-power mode may be required. With a digital camera, use the picture display panel to review the results.
On cloudy days, use the camera's fill-flash mode if it has one. The flash will brighten up people's faces and make them stand out. Also take a picture without the flash, because the soft light of overcast days sometimes gives quite pleasing results by itself.

This is a common problem resulting from on-camera flash. Move your flash off- axis. Use a flash bracket and connecting cord. You can also bounce the flash off a ceiling or wall. You can also use remote flash triggers to fire a flash that is mounted on a stand or anywhere else, as long as it is not on camera.

Blurry Pictures

Blurry photos are usually the result of camera shake. The simplest way to remedy this problem is to buy and use a good, sturdy tripod. If you can't shoot with a tripod, remember to use a faster ISO on digital cameras or faster film on film cameras. This allows you to increase your shutter speed. The faster the shutter speed, the less likely you are to suffer from camera shake. A rule of thumb for handholding is to use a shutter speed that is 1/lens focal length or faster. In other words, if you're shooting a 200mm lens, you need 1/200th second or faster. Don't forget to compensate if you shoot digitally. If you use a 200mm lens on a Nikon D100, it is the equivalent focal length of 300mm, so you will need to shoot at 1/ 300th of a second if you want to handhold.
